The compilation album's opening song, a cover version of The Allman Brothers Band's "Midnight Rider" from Back in '72, has been out of print for decades and is available on Compact Disc for the very first time. "Star Tonight" was written and recorded by Bob Seger in 1985 but initially released in a version by Don Johnson, with Willie Nelson on backing vocals, on his solo debut album Heartbeat (1986). The song "Wildfire" was about to be the title track of that album at one point, but finally it didn't even make the tracklist. One of the few remaining streaming holdouts of note, Seger cites an ongoing dispute between his longtime manager Edward "Punch" Andrews and Capitol Records for keeping his catalog off of services like Apple Music and Spotify. While so many contemporary major label artists including Drake seem content to game the respectively loosened Billboard chart and RIAA certification rules that count streams as sales equivalent units, Seger stands to make more money by opting out. One key factor in the milestone success of Greatest Hits has to do with its availability, or rather the lack thereof, in the digital music marketplace.
